Isn't the relatively low gearing of the NA responsible for the relatively "low" mpg.  My best in my 1.6 '91 is about 32 on the road.  High revs = more gas consumption, the price of pep with a small engine in all the gears.

I would suggest you go to miata.net, join , and on the home page go to the "reviews" section, and see what you come up with.  Try goodwin racing.com, or flyinmiata.com for good quality products, avoid cheap units, the BORLA will be buzzey at best, Moss products are not know for long life. Racing Beat is another good brand.  I had the FM on the 96/97 frankencar, but right now I have the goodwin racing unit on my 2010, and it holds up well, not too noisey with the

FM/Cosworth supercharger, as FI will test any muffler.
